Definitions of Editorial Tasks:

Copy Editing:
This is the most common type of editing and involves correcting the following:

• Typographical errors
• Spelling and Grammar
• Punctuation
• Consistency
• Tone
• Flow
• Dialogue
• Word Choice
• Tense
• Point-of-view

Proofreading:
Although it is often mistaken for copy editing, proofreading is actually a separate process. It involves
proofing the page proofs after they’ve been prepared by the publisher. A proofreader checks the design for
accuracy and consistency in chapter headings, page numbering, end-of-line breaks, and page breaks.
Proofreading also involves doing a line by line comparison to the original document for accuracy.

Fact Checking/Reference Checking:
This involves checking the accuracy of facts and quotations by referencing your original sources and/or
checking other sources.
